Latest kernel update hangs

I tried to install the latest kernel update, but the process hangs after

Generating grub configuration file ...
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-5.0.0-17-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-5.0.0-17-generic
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-5.0.0-16-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-5.0.0-16-generic
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-5.0.0-15-generic
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-5.0.0-15-generic

What should I do now? Most of the google info about grub hanging looks
fairly old.

It's hard to tell what the problem is and how one might recover.
