When you say they would not accept your password do you mean you got
an error saying the password was wrong or did it go and think for a
few seconds then go back to the login screen without a password error
message?  If the latter then that likely means it accepted the
password but then something went wrong, such as X crashing, so it
logged you out again and put you back at the login prompt.
