Comments/Problems:After allowing the automatic upgrade I was initially able to view and check out the new main screens. Then I knew I needed to verify that it would close down and reboot. This is where the problem came in. I was not able to reboot. My full discussion may be found here: Require help upgrading to 18.04 with Password protected harddriveI have a 2TB Password Protected harddrive, encryption is built into the harddrive. I was able to install 16.04 LTS with the encryption several years and never had a problem. When the upgrade to 18.04 occurred the upgrade did not process the encrypted harddrive part as expected the same way that it had with 16.04. When I later used the LiveCD to attempt to correct the upgrade the problem I found was this. Using LiveCD as my temporary 18.04 OS I was able to access the encrypted harddrive by entering the password and then I could look all through the harddrive, even see the partitions were EXT3/EXT4. Then when I attempted to use the LiveCD Installation Step 6 I chose 'Something Else' because I knew the partitions where there. I had just seen them from the LiveCD. But when I take the steps using the Install program from the disk I am not given the same opportunity to enter the Password so that the installation program can see the Partitions that already exist. I am only given No Partitions (because the drive hasn't been properly accessed to display them) and therefore the only choice given me is to repartition the existing partition. I have chosen not to do this as I have many files, backed up as they are, yet I would rather just get the drive bootable since the 18.04 LTS is already on it. As to the different methods of access to the harddrive Ubuntu provides both Live CD and the Install program.
I believe the bug is that I should be allowed to enter the encryption password for the harddrive before the Installation program declares whether or not it can see any Partitions.
I have been without my Ubuntu computer since August 2018. It was my main computer. I have had health issues and other domestic issues that have delayed my presenting this bug. I sincerely apologize for the delay.
