A fair point.
Maté does allow that, but so does XFCE which I happen to prefer,
because I like vertical taskbars. LXDE/LXQt should be fine too.
It's mainly only GNOME and Cinnamon that don't because they can only
work via OpenGL rendering.
In theory KDE can but I have experienced many problems trying to get
KDE 5 to work in VMs (which is in some ways quite similar to using a
remote connection.)
