try following the kernel build guide from the ubuntu kernel team then:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel
(note that you should not use dpkg-buildpackage but:
fakeroot debian/rules binary-headers binary-generic binary-perarch
(though typically binary-headers and binary-generic is enough)
)
