Ubuntu 18.04 GUI File Manager Weirdness

The desktop folders *look* like normal folders.  How would I check to see if 
is some virtual gvfs folder?  What is shown on the desktop is what I get when 
I use a terminal and do a 'ls Desktop' (except with the icons).  And why/how 
would things end up in a virtual gvfs folder anyway?  Exactly what good is 
that?

The only thing is these folders were created under Ubuntu 14.04 (or earlier in
some cases, like CentOS 5 or maybe some really old version of Ubuntu -- eg
back in 2006).
