If the infamous three-finger-salut does not work,

Try holding down ALT + SYSRC, and press sequentially, one key after another:
R
E
I
S
U
B

((This should perform a restart, but if you rather would do a shutdown, type: )),

R
E
I
S
U
O

Sounds like your power button is set to put the computer to sleep, not
to turn off.

OK, 2 hints here.

[1] For any Linux computeh with a graphical desktop, if the desktop
crashes really badly and you can't use it, you can reboot cleanly by
pressing

Ctrl+Alt+F1

(or F2 through F6) until you see a text screen, and then pressing

Ctrl+Alt+Del

This is *much* safer than pulling the plug.

[2] If even that doesn't work, almost any kind of computer can be
forcibly turned off by pressing *and holding* the power button for
about 10 seconds.

This is no better than pulling the plug, but it's easier.
