Sorry, no. I didn't describe it properly. It is working in a virtual KVM
Ubuntu 16 machine with Simple Scan. On the host machine,
running 18.04.1 LTS, it isn't working with Simple Scan, but only XSane.

There's also a lengthy thread [1] about this, but didn't work.
