Ubuntu 18.04.2 unresponsive on hd activity

If I run

  [rocketmouse at archlinux ~]$ strace google-chrome-stable

on my Arch Linux install, where I do not suffer from the issue you
experience with Ubuntu 18.10 and Ubuntu 18.04, I get tons of output I
do not understand. However, as already pointed out, if something goes
seriously wrong the output of strace tends to jump out at you. The
German term is "ins Gesicht springen", my English is broken, but if
there should be something in-between the output of starce leading to an
issue, it usually tends to jump into your face as an alien from the
movie "Alien" does.
