CentOS 6 *normally* runs GNOME 2. I have removed *most* of the *visible* parts
of GNOME 2 (the only visible part is one gnome-panel, with the clock,
notification area, NM, disk mounter, plus the little icons for sound,
Bluetooth, and battery on the left end with GNOME's Workspace switcher [10
workspaces] on the right end). Otherwise, the file manager is /bin/true and
the window manager is fvwm2. I use my own menu system (I removed the GNOME
menus). I use plain old xterms. I use fvwm's icon-box (what most people would
think of as the task manager).

Not really interested in GNOME either. I am resigned to gnome-session,
because most tools now expect the whole dbus / session mamagement /
communication hackery. So long as I don't have to have junk on my screen and
it all stays quietly in background I can live with that.
I have an askubuntu question about setting the file manager to /bin/true and
the WM to fvwm2. Next I will get rid of the Dock/Launcher thingy. Since I am
sharing /home between both installs, once fvwm2 is managing my windows, things
should start looking "normal" and "sane" and me more "usable" (to me).
