This is not a valid objection.

Ubuntu has the same list of desktops available as Fedora, pretty much.

* GNOME 3 (standard Ubuntu, standard Fedora)
* KDE (Kubuntu)
* XFCE (Xubuntu)
* LXDE (Lubuntu)
* Maté (Ubuntu Maté)

Ubuntu's own Unity interface was discontinued 2 years ago. Everything
else, e.g. Ubuntu Budgie, is also in Fedora.

I can't speak of CentOS -- as you say:

That is pretty much how I feel about CentOS/Fedora/RHEL: I find them
unusable. Saying so on the RH "memo" mailing list got me fired from
the company.

But I was not proposing you switch distros. I was proposing that you
switch *versions*.

If you want to use it online, on the web etc., *run a more recent
CentOS* (or Fedora).

Run the old CentOS in a VM under a newer version. This is a much
easier combination and will be better-supported.
