Safest way to resize windows partition before installing

That's exactly my concern, because I have seen others mentioning the
same issue on those links I included in the original email. It seems
much safer to let Windows shrink itself, but my problem is that I do
not know enough windows to understand if the info in that link I found
is still correct/complete. Or if it has some consequence on how to
configure dual boot later, for example.

On the other hand, the windows built-in tools seem unable, IIUC, to
free more than half the drive, see e.g. here:

so maybe my original question should be rephrased as:

how can I know how much I can safely shrink the windows partition from
gparted? That laptop has a 320 GB drive, and I would really not leave
more than 16, ideally 8, to Windows 7, but how can I be sure that such
a big shrinking won't corrupt windows?
