Restoring backups and effect on GRUB

Thanks, for the ideas. I'm still considering options.
I back up the OS because of the large number of additional packages I've
installed. I don't always remember which ones, but it could be awkward to
discover one wasn't restored....
I do fresh installs instead of dist-upgrades, though, so it doesn't stay
too stale...
