you can install the kernel and xorg stack from 18.04, this should not
occupy more ram and leave you with the 16.04 userspace while providing
new kernel, drivers and xorg in a fully supported way:

sudo apt install linux-generic-hwe-16.04
sudo apt install xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04
sudo reboot
