Hi Brian
I repeated the usermod command, whoami and hostname.
Results are:
chas at Charles-PC:~$ sudo usermod -a -G lp charles
[sudo] password for chas:
usermod: user 'charles' does not exist
chas at Charles-PC:~$ sudo usermod -a -G lp Charles
usermod: user 'Charles' does not exist
chas at Charles-PC:~$ whoami
chas
chas at Charles-PC:~$ hostname
Charles-PC
chas at Charles-PC:~$ sudo usermod -a -G lp chas
[sudo] password for chas:
chas at Charles-PC:~$

The last usermod for chas gets no reply

After restarting my PC I tried to print a 2 page document. No output at all.
HP Device manager shows Started/Processing and Pending on the job both with
an hourglass.
