modprobe missing on your system sounds like an actually more serious
problem ... 

what does "which modprobe" return (should be /sbin/modprobe)
...

this is what you *should* see:

ogra at acheron:~$ sudo modprobe dvb-usb-af9035
[sudo] Passwort für ogra: 
ogra at acheron:~$ lsmod |grep af9035
dvb_usb_af9035         40960  0
dvb_usb_v2             40960  1 dvb_usb_af9035
rc_core                36864  2 dvb_usb_af9035,dvb_usb_v2

(and if the device is correctly initialized you should see proper
entries for this at the end of the "dmesg" output)
