I started from #101 but it appears (after rereading) that I must have pulled 
info from a few more reports (the intel 945GSE has a lot of them) so here is 
what worked (for me)

edit /etc/default/grub

#uncomment &/or add

GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x600
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1024x600

then update-grub
