I have just tried to send a message, and, it appears to have vapourised.

I had copied as much as possible, of the home directory, to a USB
thumb drive. Some files did not copy.

Then, I unplugged the HP external HDD, and, restarted the software
update/ipgrade, which completed.

I then restarted the computer, as required, and, plugged the HP HDD
in, before the computer booted.

The HDD mounted and is accessible without any problems.

I then ran dmesg, and saw no mention of the HP external HDD.

I then ran tail -30 /var/log/syslog, to find whether any probles with
the HP external HDD were showing.

Below, is the output, which shows that tail -30, appears to not limit
the output to the last 30 lines.

I think it shows that no problem is evident, with the HP external HDD.

I think the problem lasy with the file management, due to issues with
data transfer, causing me to previously, as I had mentioned, need to
abort file transfers, on a number of occasions, when they has stopped
progressing.

Copying about 30-40GB of data to the USB thumb drive, took several
hours, with the transfer rates slowing to 2MB/s, and, as low as
hundreds of kB/s.

The USBN thumb drive was brand new, and, unused, and, is rated at 150MB/s.

Even if the transfer rate had sustained at 20MB/s, over an hour
(3600s), it should have been able to transfer about 70MB in an hour.

But, the software does not allow that.

So, I think the problems shown previously, arise from file managemnt
software problems, and, not the HP external HDD.

Of course, I stand to be corrected, if my perception of this is wrong.

Of course, this outcome does not change my concerns and suggestions,
regarding the initramfs bug and its status.
