FWIW if anyone is interested I went ahead and booted into the new
kernel this morning and had no problems. Since the error noted:

Makefile:1552: recipe for target
'_module_/var/lib/dkms/tp_smapi/0.42/build' failed
make: *** [_module_/var/lib/dkms/tp_smapi/0.42/build] Error 2

and this only applies to Thinkpad laptops - https://wiki.archlinux.org/
index.php/tp_smapi I figured it was safe to boot into it.
