I'm writing off list.

Your problems are with the Freedesktop.org desktop
environment stack, which now relies heavily on
systemd and dbus.

In case you're unfamiliar, systemd is basically an end-run
around the security model and security practices of unixlike
operating systems. It is a new, heavyweight model for
managing OS resources. It introduces a new framework, based
on dbus, for managing processes and being a comprehensive
replacement for many classical unix utilities, is in an
ongoing process of shaking problems.

The systemd developers have a reputation for closing bug
reports with "wontfix" status.  Still, the team does manage
to solve many problems. You may get help on a specialized
list.

It may also be would considering alternatives to
freedesktop.org.

LTSP predates systemd and dbus and is not dependent on them.

The Devuan operating system (http://devuan.org) is essentially

Debian without systemd, and may be worth investigating.
Devuan does support dbus, so that allows many window managers
and desktop software to use dbus for notifications,
etc.
