Strange Audio Behavior

[ Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS;  Dell Optiplex 760 ]


I have been using Ubuntu for a very long time.

Suddenly, a few months ago, my audio/sound functionality changed.
I used 'alsamixer' to see what might be wrong, but failed to see anything
useful.

Symptoms?  If I run the 'Spotify' application, sound works normally ...
the music comes out of my two Altex external speaks.

But, if I fire up 'Google Chrome' and go to the Spotify web site, there is
no audible sound!
Same thing with YouTube videos ... silent.

Since the Spotify application works, but nothing else, I'm thinking that it
might be the cause.  But how?
