You shouldn't be using Synaptic for updates. That is what the Update
Manager is for.
It's not even installed by default any more, and hasn't been for
years, *because* it's not a good tool for this.
For browsing apps, use the Software Centre. That's what it's for.
This is not a flaw. Wayland does not permit X.11 apps to run as root.
This is intentional. It closes a large security hole. Yes, it is a
little inconvenient, but it is meant to do that.
