A new package needs to be installed.
"linux-image-4.4.0-96-generic"
IOW it is not an upgrade of the package
"linux-image-x.y.p-q-generic"
since it's a new package, with a different name.
Either removing a package or installing a new package requires to run
dist-upgrade/full-upgrade :).
