Hi Ralf.

There was nothing in ~/.xsessions-errors that pertained to the problem.
I have however managed to track down the culprit:
/etc/needstart/needstart.conf, which is a Perl script, was complaining
about not being able to find local::lib. I've since fixed it.

Also many thanks to Colin for his help in trying to log the GUI updater
app. Will come in handy further on down the road I'll venture.
