Hi,
I have a ageing Dell inspiron 17.5" laptop with 16.04 installed a wireless
just worked out of the box!

One thing worth checking is there is a light along the top of keyboard that
is also a switch, if it's alight then Wi-Fi is on if not then nm says
disabled by hardware switch! Dunno if this is your problem but worth
checking!

Good luck
