Alright - I have figured that one out.

Because firefox, in its malicious design, will not let the Home Page
be left  blank,  I entered the word "blank" for the Home Page, and it
goes to blank.com, which redirects to malicious web sites.

So, I overcame that, to an extent, by entering a series of blank
spaces in the Home Page field. That allows the first tab in a new
window, to be blank, but, in opening an additional tab, now I get the
"speeddial faecal matter, , and I have no idea how to get rid of that.

I have also lost the sessions facility, and I now have no idea as to
how to recover that.

It is unfortunate that mozilla designed firefox to be so obstructive
and malicious.

Once upon a time, firefox and before that, netscape, used to be
reasonably usable.

Now. firefox is simply designed to cause as much suffering as possible.
