I've only ever used it in the above context.  To go on a tangent, yes, 
you can do incremental backups:

although I think that example might be a bit overblown.  You would 
probably want the "endless differential backup":

I'm no *great* fan of DAR, but like its utilitarian nature.  I've used it 
for writing to DVD's.
