That suggests it is not a graphics driver related problem, but some to
do with your GPU chip, I'm afraid.

It shouldn't change anything once the machine has got to the desktop!

It sounds to me like you have a sick graphics chip. It's not much to
go on, and I'm not certain, but that is my guess.
