checking, I found I had in fact downloaded the AMD64 version,
but I did that not realising it meant 64 bit! I thought that 64
was an arbitrary number such as 16.04.2
but this XP machine does have 64 bit AMD cpus,
I have things functioning now on the XP machine, not tried out the Windows 7 machine,
see replies to other emails.
