Scanner Problems

I have three lenovo laptops all running ubuntu 14.02. Each has a virtual 
machine running Windows XP.

Last week I was able to scan using any laptop , either in Ubuntu or 
Windows Virtual Machine. I have an epsom perfection 3490 scanner and a 
Canon MP230 multifunction printer (both usb devices). Both were functional.

Today the linux systems cannot see the Epsom scanner , They see the 
canon but when using XSane I get the error message: Error during read : 
Error during device IO.

In the windows virtual machine Epsom Scan program finds the epsom 
scanner, but not the cannon but scans fail with the error message Epsom 
scan cannot be started.

I have tried to remove and then reinstall Xsane, but the removal process 
does not work.

Any advice greatfully received.
