search domain and NetworkManager

Aye, was going to suggest that. Is it possible to configure the search 
domain in the VPN server itself?

Perhaps it is better to ask the network-manager list themselves though. 
They are quite responsive.

The address is networkmanager-list at gnome.org but I'm sure you can 
subscribe online.
