Internet Access has been knobbled

I may have missed this somewhere in this thread but I didn't see it so
I'll ask the obvious question:

1: Unplug the cable on both ends.
2: Plug cable into the switch and into the ethernet port.
3: Do you see a connection light on the switch?
4: Do you see a connection light on the ethernet port on this computer?

If the answer to 3 or 4 above is "No" then you either have bad cables
or bad ports. You said from the beginning that this is an old system.
Ethernet devices do stop working, as do switches. Just cutting the
power on and off all the time isn't that healthy for a device that is
designed to be "On" all the time. Switches don't have power buttons
for a reason, they're not meant to be constantly power-cycled, so it's
also entirely possible the switch is wearing out as well.

If you don't get connectivity lights there, do you get connectivity
lights on both ends if you connect the computer's ethernet port
directly to the modem/router?
