The only thing I know that can take away internet access like that is 
NetworkManager when you have your connection manually configured and it 
is interfering with that; e.g. your connection is managed by 
NetworkManager but you can't actually configured it there, and you are 
not using DHCP.

But I don't know about Ubuntu 10.

I am talking about the difference between

/etc/network/interfaces

and

whatever /etc/NetworkManager/ configuration there might be. If you have 
the above, I would disable networkmanager: service disable 
networkmanager (or something of the kind).

But I have no idea whether this is the problem and not something 
hardware.
