Ubuntu 17.04 middle mouse button problems

I don't have this particular problem, but I have a different mouse problem,
so maybe mouse operation has been generally screwed up in 17.04

[FWIW: my mouse's interraction with the screen seems to go to sleep after a
period of inactivity and clicks won't work until I press a keyboard key,
though the cursor itself can be moved]
