Well I know this is nagging, but I never did see any output from any log
files from you.
A lot of people gave a lot of hints, but you never went down to the
core.
I mean people gave advice on copying installations from one drive to the
next, what tools to use for that, etc., when nobody ever really knew, or
saw any information about, what could be going on in e.g. dmesg or even
the contents of the initramfs if that helped anyone...
I mean it is very curious indeed but the Mint's kernel is not really
going to be very different.
I believe Mint Serena is the next up after Mint Sarah, which was based
on more or less the same as 16.04.
I can't tell the difference that much myself. But without detailed
information on dmesg, and output of several programs in the busybox
shell, I would not be able to diagnose anything, least of all make any
progress myself if I encountered this myself.
So you were throwing in the ropes at some point already after doing a
lot of stuff that would never be guaranteed to do anything useful (it
was just random troubleshooting, moving installations around) but I
never, you know, I just never saw you print that log information that I
had requested.
Sometimes making many attempts is just not useful at all and I mean,
sometimes making many attempts is not more useful than studying the
thing first.
Not more useful than getting some detailed information.
Anyway.
I'm glad it works for you now, I don't know what the difference is
still.
But,

I don't think it will suddenly stop functioning, this was just some
software error on Ubuntu's behalf.
If you had installed Windows 10 you would have found out in 30 minutes.
Regards.
