lubuntu failed install

I guess there may not be an answer but has anyone managed to install Lubuntu 
16.10 from a USB

I've googled around and found no real answers

the PC I was trying to install to is an old 32 bit Dell Inspiron that can (just 

very slowly) run Trusty

The install fails with "'grub-pc' package failed to install into /target/ "or 
words to that effect (all options past that dialogue just hang)
