Is disk really bad if mkfs.ext4 -c -c reports errors?

Ha! For what it's worth, I just got a new warranty replacement unit
for one of those yesterday.

It was my Time Machine backup drive, in a NewerTech MiniStack Firewire
enclosure -- which means no SMART info, not over Firewire. My Time
Machine volume got irretrievably corrupted. Linux installed OK, first
time, and upgraded from 16.04 to 16.10. Both could fsck the TM drive
and fix it, but Mac OS couldn't write to it.

In the end, Linux failed too.
