Interesting. There's a ppa for gpodder

(https://launchpad.net/~thp/+archive/ubuntu/gpodder)

and adding that then a dist-upgrade (it's held back by an ordinary
upgrade) installs a new version of gpodder. It still gives a bunch of
error messages when run from a terminal, but now the program WORKS
after it's got all the verbiage out of the way. I don't pretend to
understand why, but if it fixes the problem, I'm happy...
