Since you're happy with Dropbox, one option might be to set up a second
computer running Dropbox. If you need to write to an external drive, just
move or link the Dropbox folder to the external drive.
The downside of this suggestion is you would need to keep the second
computer running and logged in all the time, and the (optional) external
drive connected and running. The upside is the installation and
configuration is simple, and you can use Dropbox's built-in versioning
commands (via their web site) as needed.
