It's at least not easier, if it should be hard getting access to a
screwed D-Sub.

Tools such as lxrandr are much too unrefined.
I'm using a script, not only based upon xrandr, but also to
correct panels and wallpaper, if needed. The wanted settings are
available by a sub-section of the panel's main menu, see attachment.
