Yesno, it's a user repository and some package builds neither follow the Arch policy, nor any kind of rhyme or reason. The AUR is less important, more important are the differences between the Arch Build System and Ubuntu source packages in combination with the different distros' policies. If the kind of customization should require to rebuild packages from official repositories, than it's far less work doing it for Arch Linux.
The issue regarding LTS vs to install something new from upstream is an entirely different animal. This is easier when using Arch Linux, but at the cost of being close to upstream. Those who want to stay with a workflow for GNOMEish GTK3 software should stay with an Ubuntu LTS. IMO a much GNOME biased environment is anyway inappropriate for customization.
