I have not done this, so please take with a grain of salt!

1: Disable the POP account in Thunderbird (i.e., tell it to stop
picking up email).

2: Create a new IMAP account with your email credentials, enable it,
and test that you can pick up email with it.

3: If you want all your emails in the IMAP account, just drag and drop
them from your POP account folders into your IMAP account folders.
Otherwise just leave them where they are - they are just local folders
containing emails. You can drag and drop emails out of your IMAP
account into the local folders if you want local copies, too.
