That's what I posted before Colin posted "mate-desktop", however, as
already pointed out, the OP likely wants neither
"mate-desktop-environment", nor "mate-desktop", but likely the
meta-package "ubuntu-mate-desktop". It's worth to spend one or two
hours to check what is installed by dependencies of dependencies of
those meta-packages. The OP doesn't need to care about all
dependencies, just care about what is easy to understand.
E.g. does he need both, "Nautilus" "file manager and graphical shell for
GNOME " and "Caja" "file manager for the MATE desktop"?
Btw. both file managers by default try to manage the desktop, but have
an option "--no-desktop". The OP might need to edit the desktop files.
