Mate 16.04 not kicking in after install on ubuntu 16.04

Curiously, I tried this yesterday! Installing mate-desktop-environment
seems to be a better choice. It has far more dependencies so you get
the full MATE experience. You also get the choice of desktop from the
login screen.
