Mate 16.04 not kicking in after install on ubuntu 16.04

'it does not work'. Installed "sudo apt install mate-desktop" then rebooted still no choice.
If "standard Ubuntu" means "ubuntu 16.04.1 amd64" dated download 06-09-2016.
Then thats what I did.
