16.04 problems - install, inactive/suspend, hard disk

This looks like the only way to find out...

If I leave it as manually installed, does this mean it will not be
updated automatically? Any other implications?

Good site. I did some more searching and got enough clues to try it.
It DID stop, but took > 12 hours.

The box had crashed after the above. It's not clear if it was due to
the disk init. I've had a few crashes on this new box, all of which
occurred after leaving the box for a somewhat long time [> 3-4 hrs].
Blank or completely inoperative GUI screen, no response to anything,
but a reboot worked.

Still fixing stuff, though, so it's not clear if there is a
longer-term problem. What is the best thing to look at to help
understand why it crashed? Also, is there another way into the box at
that time to do some checking?
