Software update problem

Sometimes when the "software updater" runs I get an error message.

Package operation failed
The installation or removal of a software package failed

I think this is related to updating Samba but am not sure.  Is there a log file
I can look at, if so where is it?  Also is there any apt commands to identify
or fix the problem?
