Thanks to everyone for all the help yesterday.  I ended pu dumping the old
drive, and putting a different one in.  I also managed to get a different
mobo to boot that supports more memory, so Iam up to 2gb. Lastly, I
switched to lubuntu, which seems to be making a big difference
