Christoph,
you described the editor "a very small and simple editor suitable for
beginners", all we need to know is that it is "joe". You again missed
to provide the most important information.
Consider to follow Oli's advice, "it would immensely help if you would
show us your code".
Nils' hint to "use the standard CLI editor" "nano", just for testing
purpose, is something you should follow.
Nano is self-explaining. The ^ is for the Ctrl-key, so e.g. ^X means
Ctrl+X.
The advantage of using nano, at least for testing purpose is, that it
is a much used editor, that is very good maintained.
