The reason for this is, that at least Precise doesn't
provide /usr/bin/apt and it's still a supported release,
http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise-updates/amd64/apt/filelist .
Since apt-get also segfaults for the OP, I suspect that most likely apt
will segfault, too.
I don't know how feature-rich apt for Trusty is, so I tend to be
careful with per se recommending apt.
